WMP IS hurt

Just sent to me:

Wily Mo Pena, after having a Gad MRI earlier today and an examination of his left shoulder with Nationals orthopedist Dr. Ben Shaffer, has a small tear and impingement in his left rotator cuff, as well as, fraying of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Surgery should take place within the next 7-10 days with details to follow.

Sounds like a pretty severe injury? It took this long to figure it out?

Thanks to NationalsFarmAuthority and my man Sean at DCSportsPlus (links to both are on the right) for pointing me in the direction of the news that Columbus has released Alex Escobar. So he won't be the left fielder.

Who do you think they will bring up-Escobar or Daniel?

I think they will shorten Zim's rehab - he plays third on Friday in Atlanta. Willie Harris gives up his hitting coach duties (see earlier post) and goes to left.

With Pena out, there will only be three outfielders on the roster(four if you count Casto). I think there's a decent chance Orr goes back down when Zimmerman is ready, and Escobar or someone else gets called up.

Oh boy. The Clippers released Alex Escobar.

Say what? Released?

He wasn't doing very well, anyways: .257/.318/.387.

Jorge Padilla on the other hand: .331/.400/.436.

I'm sticking to my guess - Zim active, WMP DL, Casto/Harris/Langerhans cover LF and CF.
Any word on Milledge? Two weeks are up on Sunday.

Heh I was as surprised as you were, Mike. I didn't realize how poorly he was hitting. Guess we'll be seeing more of K-angerhans and Casto in LF and Harris in center. Maybe they'll give Daniel or Guzman a shot and just send Orr down when Zim is ready? It certainly wouldn't hurt.

When is Maxwell supposed to play again?

MikeHarris said...

Maxwell is out another month.

The only downside to not calling up another outfielder is that all of those guys are left-handed batters. Then you factor in that Orr is left-handed as well, and it kind of makes more sense to send Orr down.

Although I did forget that they have been using LoDuca out there.

As an aside on Orr, I hope they let him go to the Olympics. This team isn't going anywhere and there's no sense in depriving him of that because they need a bench guy. I don't think a decision is due on it until August 1 when hopefully they'll have more options.

Why are they waiting to bring up Yurendell de Caster?

They need help in the outfield right now. When Milledge comes back, they can move de Caster to third, Belliard to first, and Lo Duca to the bench where they respectively belong.

This is rocket science? I think not.

Another voice for de Caster! I'm with you there.
